Overcoming Nail Biting with Rubber-Based Gel Nails

Nail biting, a habit that has plagued me for years, left me with soft, defenseless nails. Though I’ve been able to hide the habit, I could never maintain healthy nails. Stress and the slightest chip or snag would trigger a relapse. Despite trying numerous solutions—bitter-tasting deterrents, silk nails, gel nails, and regular manicures—nothing seemed to work, often leaving my nails damaged and prone to bleeding.

The turning point came when I started creating video content for my jewellery brand, Verus Fine Jewellery. The close-ups on my hands made my neglected nails impossible to hide, and I needed a real solution. That’s when I discovered rubber-based gel nails. Unlike other gels that caused peeling and damage, this option provided protection for my nails while offering a flexible, durable solution.

With rubber-based gels, my nails are stronger, healthier, and require only minimal attention. I usually get a fill every 4 weeks, with the occasional removal after about 8 fills. The process involves gentle filing and careful removal to protect the nail bed, and I love the fresh, chic look of a French manicure for seamless regrowth.

However, the UV light required to cure the gels does come with risks, so I always apply SPF 30+ on my hands and use gloves or plasters on vulnerable spots to protect my skin.

Now, nail biting is a thing of the past. My nails are stronger than ever, and I feel confident showing them off, even under the scrutiny of the camera. For anyone who’s struggled with a similar habit, rubber-based gel nails might just be the solution.

I have lovely salon in Cape Town that I can recommend. Drop me a comment if you'd like details.
