A Small Shift That Changes Everything

A small shift in how a garment sits can change everything — especially for women 40+ in South Africa.

Today, a truth I see over and over in my work keeps returning: a small shift in how a garment sits can change everything.

I was in Desray, collecting pieces for a visiting client, when I found myself in the fitting room with a woman trying on a black top with black tailored trousers. The top was a boat-neck style with a soft cowl.

Technically, the top did fit. Yet something in the line drew her eye to her midsection, the outfit didn't feel 'Yay!',  and her reflection showed more doubt than delight. I suggested we try one size up.

The moment she slipped into the larger size, the story changed. In the larger size the neckline could be worn slightly wider which straightened and squared her shoulders, creating the defined balance for her silhouette. The fabric fell more softly over her middle; the straightening of her shoulders and the way her lovely collarbones came out, took the eye away from the middle and formed an elegant, confident silhouette instead.

I wasn’t praising a her collar bones just to flatter her; I was reminding us both that every woman has lines to celebrate. Style, at its best, is about guiding the eye to what’s strong and true.

The trousers helped, too. A lower dart kept the waist and hip in a clean line, shaping the silhouette without adding bulk.

It wasn’t about each garment alone. It was about where the eye lands—and what it’s allowed to see.

Next came colour. The outfit was all black, against her fair skin and ash-blonde bob. The contrast between opposites felt refined, especially with a bold lip to finish. Black isn’t usually in her go-to palette given the very fair complexion, yet in the right moment it can be a powerful counterpoint—so long as the face is clean, makeup minimal, and the lip bold.

There’s a thread here that feels true for this stage of life: beauty is not about disappearing into trends but about being at ease in yourself. A hint of collarbone, a softly framed shoulder—these aren’t youthful details; they’re elegant ones when balanced well.

As the planned Rovos Rail evening suggests, presence is the point. A softly draped black velvet top, tailored trousers, a touch of gold, clean make-up and a bold lip felt exactly right—refined, considered, effortless.

The With Style Method: Edit → Silhouette → Palette → Wardrobe.

Silhouette comes before detail. Colour placement matters more than colour choice. Light needs depth. Understanding creates confidence.

Practical takeaways for your wardrobe:

  • Start with the silhouette: choose a fit that flatters your lines, even if you’re avoiding something tight in the middle.

  • Let structure guide the eye: a wider neckline or a soft drape can transform how the entire outfit sits.

  • Context matters for color: black can work beautifully with a fair complexion when paired with clean makeup and a bold lip.

  • Keep it real: style isn’t about chasing trends; it’s about ease and confidence in your own skin.

How to use this in your closet

  • Identify your go-to pieces that can be re-fitted to improve silhouette rather than simply filling space.

  • Practice three quick tweaks on a look you love: adjust the neckline, consider what happens on your waist line with darts, and test a bold lip with a clean face.
