How To Edit Your Wardrobe Like A Pro

Here's what I see in almost every wardrobe I work with:

Pieces that haven't left the hanger in years, taking up valuable space while you reach for the same few favorites again and again.

The problem isn't necessarily that you have too much or too little, it's that you're only actually using a small portion of what you own.

The first step? Getting honest about what you really have to work with. Let go of the guilt and the assumptions. Look at what's actually serving you, and what's just sitting there.

A well-edited wardrobe changes everything. You'll open your closet knowing that every piece deserves to be there - pieces that fit your body now, suit your lifestyle, and work together effortlessly.

3 Essential Wardrobe Editing Tips

1. Ask the Six Critical Questions

Before you decide whether to keep or let go of any piece, ask yourself:

  • Fit – Does it flatter your body now?
  • Condition – Is it still in good shape, or is it worn out?
  • Colour – Does it suit your complexion and work with your other pieces?
  • Comfort – Do you feel confident wearing it?
  • Shape – Does it highlight your best features?
  • The honest test – Do you put it on, then take it off every time?

If you're answering "no" to most of these, it's time to let it go.

2. Edit by Category, Not at Random

Don't pull things out randomly. Work through your wardrobe systematically:

Start with bottoms (jeans, pants, skirts), then move to tops, dresses, jackets, and finally accessories. Take each category out, arrange by colour, and assess every piece using those six questions.

This method prevents overwhelm and helps you spot patterns, like too many black pants or a lack of connecting pieces that would make your outfits work together.

3. Let Go Without Guilt

Items you're holding onto but not wearing are cluttering more than just your closet. They're taking up mental space and reminding you of purchases that didn't work out.

The truth? These pieces will be gratefully received by someone else. Donate to organizations like ChicMama's Do Care, sell through Resale Therapy, or pass them to friends and family. Making your clothes available to others is a generous act, not a failure.
