Question Time #1 – Apple Shape

Hi Candice

I am a plus size apple shape, 173cm tall, Size F bust looking to be funky. I would love to stop wearing boring jeans. I would love to wear the cropped, wide leg and high rise jeans but I don’t know how to match a top to it.

  1. The first point to keep in mind with your size F is that you are better set with a V-neck top. You want to lengthen your neck and elongate your upper body portion.
  2. You should look for a fabric with some weight to it. Not a thick heavy fabric but T-shirt stretch cotton, or light knit’s which will skim your bust and drop gently down from your widest point. You are not looking for clinging to your midriff, just dropping past it. Lightweight sheer fabrics, and some silky tops will create more volume on the bust.
  3. Be aware of small pleating details at the shoulder or front of the shirt. They are great for small busts but often bring too much volume for busty women.
  4. Anytime one wears a high waist the shirt should be fairly short. Long enough not to have an exposed midriff but ideally skimming the upper hip, able to front tuck easily if needed. This is usually an area that people have not recognised when moving to the high waist style. One needs the current shirt length to work with it.
  5. If the top still appears imbalance then it may be better to work with the same or similar shade top and the jeans. Avoid creating the colour block effect. Using the same shade brings in a column effect, especially once teaming it with the right jacket.
  6. If after all using all these tips the proportions still seem off then it may be that you should rethink the high waist and wide leg idea.
  7. The V in the shirt that you need may end at too close a point to the jeans high waistband.
  8. The high waist band may cause the jeans to hug your tummy top and bottom showing it off in an unflattering way. This high waist does work really well in a dress or skirt but the fall of the fabric is different to jeans.
  9.  There are better options available to apple shapes in mid-rise straight cut, flare cut and boot leg jeans. These will highlight your narrow hips and slender thighs (without creating the skinny jean lollipop effect) and all of which are really trending right now and can also be cropped!  Plenty of funky style with these jeans that as an apple you can rock much more easily than pear shapes can.
